Conservatorship / Guardianship
It is difficult caring for an adult who cannot handle their own finances or care for themselves. Whether an elderly person diagnosed with a neurocognitive disorder, or a younger person who has been seriously impaired as the result of an injury, the law provides methods to assist known in different jurisdictions as probate conservatorship or guardianship. Our attorneys can help you navigate the various types of probate conservatorships or guardianships which may be available to assist. Depending on the jurisdiction, conservatorships may be general or limited in scope. Limited conservatorships are for developmentally disabled adults who cannot fully care for themselves or their property, but perhaps do not need the higher level of care under a general conservatorship. Developmental disabilities include autism, epilepsy and cerebral palsy that began before age 18. They also include other conditions that require similar treatment. Our attorneys will work with you to ensure that the best possible structure is put into place that gives you the legal authority to care for your loved one.
